IC Sockets
IC sockets are soldered onto a circuit board and a chip can be inserted in the socket when the soldering is complete. The purpose of an IC socket is to be a placeholder for the IC chip and serves as a component that allows safe removal and insertion of the chip. Production Sockets are used in the development or prototype phases but are also a valuable solution for applications where regular IC updates are required. Standard Test and Burn-In Sockets are through-hole mounted in a molded body to keep the price competitive. Surface Mount Technology (SMT) Sockets use high performance spring probes that provide reliable and repeatable insertions.
